I've been using a D-Link DI-704UP router with two PCs for 2 months without a problem, but two weeks ago, one of them suddenly became extremely slow when surfing, receiving email, or transferring files to/from the other computer. My cable connection is normally 8 Mbps, but now it is 8 Kbps on this computer. I tried removing the router and connecting it directly to the cable modem, and to my surprise, it got back to normal. Then I reconnected it to the router and again it was slow. The router, however, works perfectly with the other computer... I'm completely stuck not knowing what the problem is. Does anyone have an idea what might cause this?

try a different port in the router. set the ports to 100mb full duplex as well as the card if you can. try a different cable.

I tried to switch cables, same thing. I also tried connecting the PC to each one of the four ports on the router, and no matter what, it's stays abnormally slow. No problems with the other computer though. Strange. I'll try resetting the router... But will it erase all my firewall rules?

If you reset the router it will revert to the default firewall settings, yes. However you've already proven that it's not the problem; it's the client.

Compare your TCP/IP settings on the "bad" PC to the "Good" PC. Run a virus scanner and make sure you're not infected. Reinstall the NIC drivers and if this doesn't work, pull the NIC from the "Good" PC and install it to the "Bad" PC and see if the problem clears up. It sounds to me like the NIC is going out.

I don't have a NIC, it's the built-in connection on the Intel D875PBZ mobo. And again, it works fine when connected directly to the cable modem. I have all the latest firmware, drivers, and patches for every component in the system and XP SP1 with all the updates. I ran a scan with NAV 2004 Pro with the latest definitions and it came up clean. I also ran Ad-Aware 6 and SpyBot S&D. Nothing. I'll try resetting the router anyway, nothing else to do...

Tried resetting the router. Didn't help. Then I checked to make sure the TCP/IP settings are the same for both computers. They were. Why does WinXP behave differently when connecting through a router than it does without a router? What changes in the configuration of Windows as a result of connecting through a router?

Just discovered something. In Network Connections, when I check the Status of the Internet Connection under Internet Gateway, the "Bad" PC shows this:

Internet Gateway
Status: Connected
Duration: Not Available
Speed: Not Available

Activity
Internet-----Internet Gateway-----My Computer
Packets:
Sent: ------ Not Available ------- (number varies)
Received: - Not Available ------- (number varies)

For the "Good" PC, nothing says "Not Available", everything shows up normally. Does this help any of you...?

Sounds like your network stack is screwed up. Google for a winsock fix.

Your suggestion actually sounded logical to me, so I tried Winsock Fix 1.2 for XP. Unfortunately, after rebooting, everything was still the same. I guess I'll need to reformat and start from scratch. Anyway, if anybody has any more suggestions, please post, since I'm not gonna reinstall before next week...

i'm kinda in the same situation as you...

when i plug into the modem directly (netgear DM602) all is fine.

but when i go through the router (netgear WGT624) hotmail seems to grind to a halt. most other pages are somewhat slower, but acceptable, but hotmail is just not going anywhere.

however, on the 2nd networked pc, everything is fine. I've checked and we both have same settings.

The only different thing i notice from you is that the status on my internet connections is fine.

hope you get it sorted, i'm pulling my hair out here.

I was pretty stunned today to discover that after completely wiping my partition, formatting, and reinstalling a fresh copy of WinXP Pro with SP2 and all the latest drivers, THE PROBLEM DID NOT GO AWAY!!! Honestly, this is by far the strangest problem I've ever encountered with a computer. What on earth is wrong with my setup??? Please, someone help me here!!!

Hello!

I also have a slow DI-704UP over here. Surprisingly enough, I have slow uploads, but reasonable download speeds, on all networked PCs. Like ecoad, when I connect directly to the modem, the connection is excellent. D-Link asked me to reflash the firmware, done, didn't help. Then they asked me to check MTU settings with my ISP, done, didn't help. No viruses found, I am also stuck.

The setup seems to work better when cold. When the router goes hot, my "100M" light on the DSL modem starts flashing all the time and the connection gets poor. Can't really figure out what's going on.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ricardo.
