Hi All,
Need a bit of advice and hoping somebody might be able to help. I have a friend who in practice manager in a surgery. At present they have 5 PC's/Laptops, all connected to a switch which in turn has a DSL router connected for internet access. One of the PC's in the office has the medical system database on its HD (same as the OS) which is shared out. Noticed that it’s not backed-up and sitting on a pc is not great as if the system crashes/HD failure none of the other PC's/Laptops would be able to access the medical systems which has all the patients details/records, nor a backup to restore. Can’t be much downtime if a failure happens as its Medical surgery. Not sure what system to put in place. Should I go with a NAS box and Tape Drive? Putting the database on the NAS box with Raid 1 configuration and sharing it out and attach a Tape Drive (LTO1) to it to back all the database daily or should I go with an Entry level sever with Windows SBE with 5 cals, Raid 1 config and a Tape drive built in or attached. There are also three printers in the office which are shared out on the same PC with the Database on it. Also PC/Laptop's are setup with email in Outlook using pop accounts. Not sure if a server is overkill, so hoping for a second opinion. All help greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Stephen

NAS or server would be determined by the app. If the pc is acting as an app server you would need a server. If the pc is just holding the database and all laptops have the software installed [they are the app servers] and are just accessing/loading the db then NAS will do nicely [and cheaper].
Mirror is excellent
Backup to tape is excellent
