I have a small home network of win98SE systems. They all work fine on the LAN. I am now adding an XP system. The Win98 systems have their drives set up to require a password. The XP system can access their drives without being asked for a password(??). However when an attempt is made to change anything on the win98 systems I get the following error message;
"Network access denied. Be sure you have the correct network permissions to perform the operation."
I assume it's because the password was never asked for and given. I guess my question is, why isn't XP asking for the password. I've searched through the Network options and haven't been able to find anything about passwords. I can't even find the place where you set up passwords for the XP drives.
I'm new at XP and any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I found before it worked well to log into windows 98 as Administrator. That seemed to help when accessing XP shares. Try that, it may not work, but it is worth a try. If that does not work, try using the password you used to log onto the windows xp machine. Type that password into the prompt in win 98. good luck!

Thanks Shane, I'll try logging in as Administrator.

I don't get a request for a password from XP. I don't know if this is the reason but ... This system was upgraded from win98 to XP and Windows Logon was used in win98 and I didn't have to login with it.

Thanks!

Unfortunately I didn't get an `Administrator' option when logging on. I received two options, mine and `Owner'. I tried logging on as Owner and I got the same error message when trying to change something on the other system.

Did you have zonealarm installed on the win98 machine before you did the upgrade? If you did and you did not uninstall it , try restarting it through your start menu and see if that does it. ( I just had it happen to me )

Thanks pcphreck! I bet that you have the solution. I did have ZoneAlarm installed before the upgrade. If all else fails I will restore a backup of win98, uninstall ZoneAlarm and then do the XP upgrade again.
Thank you very much!!!!
