Hi, I am a total novice at this sort of thing, so wondered if any one could help me.

Have an Amilo 2727 laptop running on vista, have previously connected to wireless at a friends house.

Brought the netgear WGR614, connected all the wires, amended all the settings as required via the IP address etc. But laptop still does not pick up the router, picks up a neighbours wireless router but not mine. Do not know what I am doing wrong. This is the 2nd router I've had in 2 days as thought the other was faulty.

Please can someone give me any ideas as to what may be the problem??

Thanks in advance

When you say, "amended all the settings," what do you mean? Did you set up encryption in the router setup for security purposes? If so, did you add the settings at your PC?

What is the IP address of the router? Can you ping it from the laptop? What about the IP of the laptop itself? Is it set up to obtain an IP address automatically from the router, or did you assign it a static IP?

The router Ip address is 192.168.1.1. It is set to obtain IP address automatically. When I do the ipconfig/all it says media disconnected. My wireless is turned on, as it picks up a neighbours router. I have updated the firmware for the router and the driver for the wireless card. I also have no idea how you can ping the router can you please explain. The LAN works going through the router then connected to the PC but this seems to be only way I can connect to the internet at the moment. It is just driving me mad because I cannot figure out what is wrong.

Your "Media disconnected" error issue sounds a lot like the problem I had with a notebook PC I purchased for our church. I found that if I disabled encryption, or if I used a USB wireless adapter, I could connect to my wireless router. However, when I re-enabled encryption and tried to access the router using the notebook's internal wireless NIC ... "Media disconnected." I happen to have a Linksys WRT54GL router, flashed with a third-party firmware called Tomato. I checked in a forum for others who use this firmware, and someone suggested that I disable a firmware feature called Afterburner. As soon as I did that, I could connect up to my router with no problem. I wonder if there might be a similar feature in your router's firmware settings.

Hi thanks

I called Netgear Technical Support and after being on the phone for 25 mins, in which time the person only took my details and then we changed the router settings, changed the channel to 11 and hey ho, all works fine!!!
