This is the link to my routers support page:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/rp614v2.asp

First a question about DHCP being disabled?
I have the router setup as a DHCP Server and no static IP addresses yet Ipconfig /all Displays DHCP Enabled ... NO.
Then both of my computers can ping the router at 192.168.0.1, the Ping for TCP @ 127.0.0.1 is good on both. I have tried the loopback test @ 127.0.0.0 and get bad results. I have tried using the XP simple file sharing feature to remove security (passwords) & tried without simple file sharing (both machines logged in as administrator). I have all firewalls disabled/Un-installed. no matter what I do the 2 machines (named seperately and in the same workgroup:MSHOME) will not see eachother.
I start by connecting solely my computer (Named:Paul) to the router and setting everything up then Shutdown/restart and once it gets to the desktop in windows I then connect the second machine (Named:Heather) (powered off from start) and go through the process to set it up. I then check with the routerlogin.net\basicsettings.htm page and it shows both machines & their names & also thier MAC adresses, All is well. I have the
correct UDP ports open for the games & programs as per their support websites. I have even tried using A DMZ server to no avail. The proper switch port lights light up on the router for which I am pluging the RJ45 cables in. Also the status LED's built into the NIC's are lighting up (Both router an NIC's lightup green btw). I have tried every version of firmware listed on the above site from
5.01 - 5.20 (currently left at 5.20). I cannot fileshare and cannot play network games.
any ideas?
Thankyou in advance :)
Note: Services Workstation & Server are running as they should @ startup, I have also tried assigning static IPs with the same results only then neither machines could access the router. I have made sure the files/folders/drives I want shared are and they are shared as Example C or D not C$ or D$.

What is your question? You listed a bunch of things that don't work, but it is not clear from your post which problem you are trying to fix.

If I understand your post correctly, these are the problems you are currently having:

1. The two computers will not "see" each other.

2. Neither computer can "fileshare [or] play network games."

Some things to consider about #1:

-What does "see" mean in this context? What are you trying to do that is failing?

Some things to consider about #2:

-What games and/or filesharing apps are you trying to use?

-In what way are they failing? I mean - can you not host network games? Can't join network games? Need more information than just "doesn't work".

Please organize your thoughts a bit and post back with some more information on the above. In the meantime, let's be sure that each computer has basic network connectivity. From each computer, can you...

-get the output of ipconfig /all? Post it here.

-ping the computer's local IP address (NOT localhost).

-ping the other computer?

-ping the gateway (should be the router's LAN address)

-ping the DNS server(s). What are the DNS server addresses?

-ping an Internet host by name? www.google.com, for example.

If any of those fail, lots of other things are likely to fail. If all of that succeeds, we can go on to troubleshooting the larger issues. Good luck :)

DHCP Server diesabled? No, you need that to assign IP addresses to your clients.

The router should be connected between the modem and the clients. All clients should have Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP installed and at default settings ("Assign IP Address Automatically" and "Use DHCP Server for WINS Resolution"). Disable the XP firewall and make sure each client has an account set up for each user on the network.

(Note that if you install SP2, it automatically enables the XP Firewall at default settings. Yes, this is a pain.)

From one of the clients connect to the router at its default addresss (192.168.1.1 in this case, I believe, but check your manual) and run the set up wizard. Should detect your network and get an IP assignment from your ISP so you can connect to the Internet.

If the router won't connect to the Internet (and this is very important) return it and get some other brand than Netgear. I've had 2 Netgears in a row fail to connect and spent 2 weeks on each trying to troubleshoot them. My first Netgear worked (and still works) perfectly but their QC has gone in the toilet since then and many people are complaining about poor or intermittent performance. If they work, they work great out of the box and users rave about them. If they don't Netgear's technical support is virtually non-existent and jiggling with the settings manually will just have you pulling your hair out.

I am so sorry, I was in a rush and just typed what I knew with the problems I was experiencing. First off I would like to say that I have fixed the problem. apparently when I un-installed Norton Internet Security 2004 and Zonealarm they left services behind running and thus the .exe files could not be removed during the un-install. I removed the .exe(s) and edited the registry to remove the services and instantly had all the files I had shared on both machines appear in my network places. What I meant by "see eachother" is when I would goto my network places and try to view workgroup computers I would get an error "MSHOME is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource......" and I could not map network drives or add a network place. sorry about that. The games I was trying to host on the (Paul) machine were Warcraft III, Unreal Tournament GOTY, UT2004, Starcraft etc. and I had the proper ports open in the router's settings.
But again sorry to waste your time, I should have expected something this simple to wreck my setup.
Thankyou Very much though :)
It runs beautifully now!!! :-) YAY!

Glad it worked for you and yes, ZA and NIS have a nasty habit of leaving traces behind after the uninstall. Check the port-forwarding on your router to make sure you don't leave any nasty holes for worms to ooze through.
