NetGear router problem

When I connect the cable modem directly to the computer, I have no issues and can use the internet without problems. I have properly set up the router in the following configuration (a configuration that I used all of last year):
cable modem -> router -> computer (via port 1)
The internet light on the front of the modem does NOT light up, HOWEVER, when I look at my network connections in windows, it says I am sending AND recieving packets. I cannot however surf websites or get onto any instant messenging programs or view any websites. I used this same router with this same ISP for an entire year last year and never had a problem.

Can you connect to the administrative page at 192.168.0.1? Are you using a straight-through or crossover cable between the modem and the router? Run the IPCONFIG from the Command Prompt and see if you're getting an IP address from the router. Is your TCP/IP set to "Assign IP Address Automatically" and "Use DNS Server for WINS resolution"?
What I would do is reset the router to factory defaults and run the setup program again, making sure that DHCP is enabled and set to get its IP Address from your ISP's gateway server. Some ISPs record the MAC address of your network adapter; you may need to make sure this MAC address is entered into your router's setup.
