Hi,

I purchased the Netgear MR814 wireless router over the weekend. It claims it is a 3-in-1 device - router+switch+wireless access point. I'm trying to decide if it will do what I want it to do.

I have an SMC wireless router attached to my cable modem in my upstairs office. It currently runs a wired desktop and a wireless laptop.

I have a ReplayTv digital video recorder in my downstairs living room and want to add it to my home network. Therefore, I need a way to add the ReplayTv to my wireless network.

I bought the MR814 with the intention of using it as a wireless access point. I will use it in my living room to connect it to the ReplayTv using a cat5 ethernet cable.

My question is: Will the MR814 then be able to talk to my SMC wireless router via a wireless connection? Or, do the 2 routers have to be hard-wired together? (I intend to turn off DHCP on the MR814 and assign it a static ip address).

Thanks for any help!

I don't believe you can do so.

The wireless part of your router is LAN which doesn't offer DHCP client mode. In other words, router LAN can't accept IP address, it can only issue one. WAN port however, can be a DHCP client.

You need an access point to get a wireless bridge or a crossover Ethernet cable between two locations.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply!

After further research and a call to Netgear, the 814 will not do what I want. Hard wiring the 2 routers together is not an option. Heck, if I wanted to hard-wire I could skip the 2nd router all together!

Gonna have to wait for a good deal on a bridge!

Thanks again!!!
