NetBIOS not working.

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 2.802 GHz / 3007 MB
I don't know what the problem is, but whenever I type in '\\servername', it doesn't work, but when I type in '\\' which is the FQDN or an IP address, then it works.

This is really irritating and this happens to only clients not joined to the domain and i always have to specify the .com when joining the domain. Before on my older domain, I didn't have to specify the .com and just type in the domain name itself.

I never used a WINS server and I am not using a WINS server now, so please tell me what the problem is. I tried enabling NETBIOS in the TCP IP, but that did not work.

Whats the problem?

sounds more like a dns issue. Can you ping the server by name?

Netbios over tcp/ip has to be enabled at both ends though not having a wins server means this gets resolved by broadcasts.

Hey wanderer,

I think its my Linksys Router giving out DHCP which also specifies Public DNS's to my clients for Default DNS, even though I set the Primary DNS to the DC, its strange because I never had this problem before with the same router. I set Static IP to my standalone machine and the problem does not occur. I am thinking of just using DHCP on my Server itself.

you should be able to set the dns entries for the server in the dhcp server of the router. That will address this issue.
