Hello, I have got a strange issue with two computers. One is a Windows XP Pro with two nics NIC1 is for the local area network NIC2 is for the internet and the other is a Windows 98SE with one nic for the local area network. Both machine are connected with a switch for the local area network. The problem is that when I connect the Windows XP Pro machine to the internet that after 15 minutes I'm unable to connect to the windows98 by unc path I still can ping it by name and ip but can't access it by name or ip with the unc path. When I restart the WIndows XP machine the problem is solved for ±15 minutes. Ideas???

Are you using ICS on the XP computer to share the internet with the windows 98 computer?

No I don't share the internet connection with the win98

Hmmmm.....that's an interesting issue. I'm unable to connect to the windows98 by unc path I still can ping it by name and ip but can't access it by name or ip with the unc path. This leads me to believe the issue is on the 98 PC. What it could be, I'm not sure but at this point, if it were me, I'd first try uninstalling netbios, then reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, do the same with the TCP/IP stack. If that doesn't do it, try uninstalling the NIC and rebooting and then reinstalling the NIC.

I don't recall netbios being a seperate install with windows 98. Like in xp its builtin to tcp/ip. Netbeui was a separate install. Let's make sure we have a clear picture here of your setup. You are not sharing the network on the xp host pc How are you connecting the 98 box to the xp box? Via a hub/switch or a crossover cable? On the xp box you have a ip on nic1 and on nic2 Please post the results of a ipconfig /all so we can review these nic tcp/ip configurations.

98 ipconfig doesn't have a gateway entry. It should be 192.168.1.100 Notice on your 98 ipconfig this? IP Routing Enabled. . . . . : No but on your xp box you should have the same set to yes IP Routing Enabled. . . . . : yes [ja] You can't use ICS due to the 192.168.0.x ip range on the wan interface. You can use bridging.
