Hi
We have a network with Windows 98/Windows 2000 Professional machines, most of the network is connected by switches and some hubs. We are going to replace all hubs with switches soon.
I have enabled netbeiu and tcp/ip on all Windows 98 machine, netbeui is bind to microsoft network and tcp/ip is the default protocal for internet and by default the windows 2000 machine has enabled netbeiu over Tcp/ip.
I do find when browsing the network computers that it's very slow on the Windows 2000 machine and instant on windows 98 machines. But if I disable Netbeiu over Tcp/ip it's just as fast as windows 98. I think because netbeiu is setup to communicate with our nt server and it's faster than tcp/ip for internal network.
My question is by having two protocols on the network does it slow it down when say doing file transfers, saving and everyday operation for say 100 computers. I know that Netbeiu is faster and non routable and TCp/ip needs to be enabled for us to use the internet.
Does netbeui broadcast all packets even though it passes through a switch and Tcp/ip doesn't? The switches we have are just 3com office connect type switches. Or is it better to just use TCp/ip for everything?
Any suugestion..
ThanksKen

Because netbeui is faster than tcp/ip and safer protocol.
TCP/IP is the default protocal for internet but for file sharing it's netbeui, you can tell when you diable it in windows 2000 when browsing the network
