Hi,
the problem is this, I have 2 pcīs connected through a cross cable by their network cards, one of them is a Pentium III 1GB with Windows XP, and the other one is a P100 with Windows 98, there is a lot of difference, both have a 3Com Etherlink 10/100 network card, but the problem is that at the time of transferring files or any sort of things from one to another, it getīs really slow, I donīt know what the problem might be, but I canīt transfer nothing because it never ends, (Example: I pass ICQ (4MB) from the PIII to the P100 and it takes about from 10 to 15 minutes the transfer, I know that isnīt normal, so if someone could help me Iīd be glad to hear any opinion
Thanks
Andres

Are the link speed and duplex set to the same on both network cards?

How are the IP addresses assigned?

May have driver or auto-neg problem.

Get the latest drivers for 98 and XP for the 3com cards and the Management Software (Allows you to check for errors and set speed and duplex mode).

http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/downloadsindex.jsp

After installing the latest drivers and setting both cards to 100Mbps Full Duplex (If both will go that far).

If your times are still bad, try a different cable.

Iīve set the Ip addresses like this, in PC#1 the PIII Iīve assigned 192.168.1.10, and this communicates to PC#2 by the Workgroup only, I didnīt assign any IP to PC#2

you should asign the second pc with the ip of 192.168.1.11 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0 , and make sure that both pc's have the same subnet. i really dont think that the ip's are the issue. it sounds to me like the dirvers (what gary said). if all else dosent work, replace the cable.

The problem could be TCP/IP. Try adding NetBEUI to both computers, its fast, small, and almost fool proof. At least this will tell you if you have a physical network problem or not.

Iīve tried installing the lastest 3Com Drivers but itīs still working very slow, today iīll try changing the cable. And if that doesnīt work, iīll add NetBEUI.
Thanks to all for your help.
