need to network desktop and laptop

May 5, 2009 at 23:13:54
Specs: Windows 98
I am having high speed DSL soon and I have this desktop, which is an old computer running windows 98se. I am planning to get a laptop soon. I understand that my ISP will provide a modem. As I've read from the the ISP's page about the modem, it says the modem can connect to the computer with 2 ways: USB or ethernet. Both cables will be provided.

Anyhow, I do not know how to set up internet sharing connection between the laptop and the desktop. The desktop will be located downstairs and the laptop, preferably upstairs.

Must I buy a wireless USB adapter for my desktop and a wireless router ? since my laptop will have wireless b/g ?

Or will there be any other ways ?

Or do i get a cable router for my desktop downstairs......but what about my laptop upstairs ?
I am not very computer literate. Please help me.

Any advice is much appreciated, thank you.

Thank you for both of your responses.

Does that mean that I can either buy a wired or wireless router and it would guide me through ?

Like, if I were to buy a wireless router, it will mean that I will need to buy a wireless adapter card for my desktop, right ?
But since my OS is 98se, will I need to upgrade it to XP, maybe, so as to suit the wireless adapter card ?

Also, if I were to get a wireless router, have the wireless adapter for my desktop, my laptop may automatically pick up a signal ?

What if I get a wired cable for my desktop, what about the laptop then ?

Please advise. Thank you.

I would buy a wireless router. They are almost exactly the same price (usually) and this gives you the option of connecting the laptop either via wireless, or wired. I highly recommend you purchase a router with 4 LAN ports. This will allow for future expansion should you buy more PC's and/or laptops.

All SOHO routers come with setup guides.

It's worth noting, if you go with a wireless router and do setup a wireless network that it's VERY much worth your while to setup WPA encryption on your wireless network to prevent others from using it and/or accessing your PC and laptop.

Well like Curt said It'll be best to have a Wireless one and it's more expandable to use. Also before you upgrade your system make sure that it can really support the OS you are going to install. Because you might end up having difficulties on having a slow computer. Also I think it's up to you if you want to make your computer a wireless if you already have a Spare a meter long UTP with rj45 then it's enough to connect your computer to one of the ports of the Wireless router.
