I have my printer associated with my desktop by cables. I have a wireless router and a laptop. Everything works fine but I just don't know how to set it up so that I can print from the laptop. Can someone walk me thru it? Thanks

First -share the printer. On desktop computer go to printer, right click on printer, select properties. On new windows with printer properties select "Sharing" tab and choose "Share this printer option" - you can change name of this shared printer to something more familiar to you. Next go to your laptop, START-Printer and Faxes - click "Add Printer". On new window click NEXT and select "A Network Printer...." and click NEXT than NEXT again - make sure option "Browse for Printer" is selected. On new screen you should see your printer or you may need to look for it through your network tree. Have fun!

Thanks for the info. I tried it but it says "windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name is typed incorrectly or the specified printer has lost it connection to the server."" Yet, I have typed in printer name as plain as could be. Any other ideas.

At what point are you getting the error? What share permissions did you set?

ok I tried again this morning. We restarted the desk top, made sure I had the sharing on for the printer. I can seem to bring up names of printers when I get to the screen where I browse for printer name. It is a Canon MP150 series printer but it looks like the name thats assigned to it is just printer. In the box where I assume the printers names should come up, the Microsoft Windows Network comes up and when I click on that it says I have to name the printer. When I do that I get the error message. Any suggestions.

You are naming printer only when you share it, on desktop computer. On laptop, when you browsing for network printer you should just select printer, it should shows it with the name you assigned during sharing process.

yea maybe thats what should happen but not what is. It tells me when I get to the browse for a printer page that I have to fill in the printer name and as I said above, nothing come up for me to select other the Microsoft Windows Network choice. I'm sure I've done some little thing wrong or in the wrong succession but dang if I know what it is!

On the window called "Add printer Wizard" you should have two boxes, small which say: "Printer" on left side - this is the place where you can type path and name of the network printer if you know and remember it. But if you don't know path/address to this printer you can browse for it in the box below, which is bigger and is called: "Shared printers:". First/top line in this box you should have small icon and text "Microsoft Windows Network". Next line should be small multiple computers icon and name of your group - default is "WORKGROUP" and below you should see yours computers and printers on your network. If you now will select any of the printer, than on top box you will see name of your printer - don't change it, just click NEXT button. If it this bigger white box you don't see your printer than doubleclick on "Microsoft Windows Network" than dclick on WORKGROUP and look for your printer - if you find it, just select it and click NEXT.

I appreciate the help but I cannot make this work. When I get to the box where I think we have the name of the computers that should be the same (and they are on laptop and desktop) it does not show up in the box and I think thats where my printer is hiding. Is all I get is "Microsoft Windows Network". In one of the previous responses it was mentioned I would need to look through the network tree. Can you tell me how to get there, maybe I can find the printer that way. I really need to get this printer associated with my laptop. Thanks
