I am trying to establish a stable network in my student research lab so that me can implement an automatic backup system. However, this is very difficult as there are several Windows versions floating about.

First, I would like to see all PCs in the Network Neighborhood. Is this too much to ask?

I have tried setting up a WINS server on Windows 2000 server and forced it as Master browser, but this didn't help. I am begginning to experiment with a domain instead of a workgroup, but I can't even get my Win ME machine to show up.

Any advice on which route to go? (workgroup or domain?) Once this is established, I will definitely need further help.

Thank you.

Setting it up as a workgroup would be fairly easy but might not be the best way to go depending on how many systems you have and wether or not you want domain features like security and such. If you are using TCP/IP as your protocol and you have installed Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer sharing, you should make all the computers members of the same workgroup. This is done in the "indentification" tab in the network properties. I'm not sure if you'll want to use static IP addressing or designate your Windows 2000 Server as a DHCP server, but definately use TCP/IP as opposed to NETBEUI, its much better and more scaleable.
Email me if you have anymore questions.
