I do not get the prompt to enter a user name and password when I try to access files on another computer in my network. I have disabled simple file sharing because I want certain folders to be protected on my pc. My network consists of 3 xp pro machines right now. But when trying to access this machine with SFS off I don't get that logon prompt???? My network would work fine when I clicked on a folder of anothers pc in the past (meaing it would give me a prompting log on screen and providing the username and pass where correct I could then browse those folders.) This for some reason is no longer an option for me and just gives me an access denied message now. Need to get the logon screen to come back up when trying to access other computers files. Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS: In order to even be able to browse my computer from the rest of the network I had to make a regedit becuase it seems there is a key that Norton Antivirus changes and prevents this. May be a possible problem.

Are you part of a DOmain? or peer to peer network? it's sounds like your ID & password are being cached, you can turn that off, if you want to.

Had the same problem with and XP & W2K machine. The XP wants a password to look at what the W2k (selected) shared folders.
I created an identical XP user profile in the W2K machine and all is well. Hope this helps.

Yes this is a peer to peer network. I have no domain setup. Just Using MShome for the group. The username and password maybe cached, if this is possible. If so how do I clear its cache????
The problem is that i am NOT getting this prompt. My network used to ask for this info when I was accessing the files and folders from the other pcs but now it is not asking for the info and just plain denying me access. It will work if I enter a user account on every pc in my network but I do not want to have to constantly do this if I never had to do it before. Any suggestions appreciated.

I have two computers, both XP pro.. and both have a different user. I DO NOT want to two make useraccounts on one computer, just so the other computer can read files.
I read on an other webpage (sorry, forgot to bookmark) that when the XP pro doesn't recognizes the username from another XP 'remote computer' it prompts for a username and password. Well.. It doesn't, atleast not for me.
Seems like this is the same problem as stated above..
I was wondering if there was a solution found.
