I have a network that I am taking over for and I am still learning about networking. The old DNS (main server running windows server 2000 advance)server is such a POS that I have to reset the DHCP and DNS almost every day to keep things up and running. I cant even ping the machine, there is no firewall up and running. I want to move the DNS and DHCP to a new server that is ready to go with windows 2003. I want to know if there is an easier way to migrate the information from one server to another and how do I fix the old server to use as a backup (and so I can BLOODY PING it).

That's easy enough. You wipe it out and reinstall the operating system after you've succesfully migrated everything over to the new DC. If you want to use it as a backup DC then you would be best to install 2003 Server on it, then promote it to a DC and finally, put a copy of the GC on it.

Check microsoft's website out. Look for Active Directory Migration Tools.
