First off let me say I'm new to Networking. I have just created my home network of two computers and I can't get the printer to work from the second computer. The first computer is a Gateway E6000 with XP Home on it, 768 megs of ram, P4 2.0 GHZ. The second computer is an older Compaq Deskpro EP, Windows ME, 256 Megs of ram, p2 266 Meghrz. The Compaq was set up as the Network Printer. I'm using a Linksys router BEFSR41 Ver. 3 and a Linksys LNE100TX ver. 5.1 in the Compaq. The printer is a Lexmark Z45. The work group for the computers is Home. I put the printer on the Compaq and installed the ME drivers and ran a test page and the printer worked OK. I then took the printer of the Compaq and put it back on the Gateway my XP machine. Under Network Places Compaq, the Compaq has icons for Printer and shareddocs and the Gateway has an icon for shareddocs. I use Zone Alarm so I put the local IP address for the Gateway in my trusted zone on the Compaq Windows ME. In the trusted zone on the Gateway XP I put the local IP address for the Compaq. Got the addresses from the DHCP Client Table in my Linksys router. The Printer in the XP is set up for sharing. On the ME computer I opened the Printer folder and I used the Add a Printer Wizard to add a second Z45 as a network printer. It said the drivers already exist and asked if I want to replace the current ones, said I'd use the current drivers and do not replace them. After the installation was complete I deleted the original Z45 printer. The printer left was Lexmark Z45 (Copy 2). I went on line an highlighted a small section to print. I clicked file, print, Print box comes up and I check selection. Under printer name it says Lexmark Z45 (copy 2). Click OK and box comes up says preparing, status bar loads to 100%. Printer Box shows lower R/H corner and says Lexmark Z45 (copy 2) and shows printer status at 0%. Ink levels are correct for this printer. Printer Icon by clock lower R/H corner and Printer Folder Flashing status bar, plus this message. Printer Folder There was a error writing to \\Gateway\Lexmark Z for printer [ Lexmark Z45 Copy 2]]: There is not enough memory to print your document. Quit one or more programs and then try again. If problem persists, try choosing Raw Spool Data Format in properties for your printer and try again. The printer will be set to work offline. To save your print job in local printer queue, click OK. I went to properties of copy 2 printer and set it to raw spool unchecked the offline check mark and tried again and got the same results. I had no programs open except I was on line for the test. The Gateway prints Ok and it is shared. When I go to My Network Places(Compaq) and view the entire network the Compaq shows a printer and share docs and the Gateway shows a printer and share docs. Windows ME computer is set to default and use off line is not checked. The spooling was set to Spool print jobs so program finishes printing faster and I changed it to Print directly to Printer. Tried printing a small selected item and got a box that said Printing Progress and then Title followed by preparing. Then immediately got a box that said Printing Error Printing Failed When Starting the Document. When I view the network and under Compaq right ckick the printer for properties it has one tab (General). It says Computer Name: Compaq Computer Type: Microsoft Networking File and Print Work Group: Home the Gateway says Computer Name: Gateway Computer Type: Microsoft Windows NT Work Group: Home Just thought I'd through that in. From the Gateway I can access the files on the Compaq with no problem. I just put them in the Shared File Folder in My Documents on the Compaq and I can read them from the Gateway. I can take a file on the Gateway XP and share it on the network and it shows up on the Compaq but when I go to read it, it says Not enough memory shut down some programs and try again. Now when I set the spooling to print direct to the other printer it shows a printer symbol down in one of the little squares by the word internet for about a second and then leaves and the printer is set off line. I t seems everything is hinged on this memory thing. I have no programs running and I have 256 megs of ram and at the time I was only using 102 megs of ram. Windows controls my virtual memory and it's 2GB. The hard drive is 40 GB with 32.4 free. I can ping both computers by IP address and I can ping them also by name. Four packets sent and four packets recieved back no losses. I can read read files on the Compaq from the Gateway XP but I can't do anything from the Compaq. I can click on the Gateway and see the files I have allowed to share on the Gateway, I just can't open them or print. I also removed and reinstalled the lan card and it made no differance. Sorry this is so long but I wanted to tell what I've done. Any help on this problem would be greatly appriceated.

I'm not exactly sure how Lexmark is, but if that was an HP printer, your method of installation would be causing problems. Best bet is to uninstall the printer from the compaq and let it remove the drivers. Then install it again. If Lexmark has some type of install process that involves putting software on, like HP which won't ever let you just install the drivers, do it that way. Otherwise I suggest double clicking on the printer through Network Neighborhood on the Compaq. That's about all I can think of. Make sure both computers have similar protocols (they most likely do), TCP/IP and Microsoft File and Print Sharing.

Sorry that I'm late to respond, been gone. What I did was removed the Lexmark from the Me computer and cleaned all traces of it from the machine. Then I took the Lexmark installation disk and it detects that you do not have a printer attached to the machine. You can then use the disk and install the printer as a network printer and that's what I've just done. When you go to printers on the XP machine you have two printers now. One is Lexmark on Compaq ME and the other is the lexmark on the XP. When you check proerties on the Compaq it says Proerties for Compaq and it is not shared. The XP is shared and shows a hand under it. When you go to the ME machine and select an item to print. Click file> print.> the box comes up and the progress bar shows it loading> print box comes up lower R/H corner showing proper ink levels for the machine and the voice says printing started. then I get the box that says error not enough memory and that's where it stands as of now.
