Hello,
I have a dell d600 laptop that I am trying to setup wireless internet on. As far as I can tell from the device manager, it has a intel pro / wireless lan 2100 3A mini pci adapter card. When I originally bought the computer, all the internet connections were pre-configured. I never used the wireless though and then reformatted the harddrive. I now want to configure my wireless internet and have tried a number of things with no success. I first tried to install the driver for my wireless card off the dell cd I have. Then I followed the instructions to set up wireless internet at my college, however I was not able to connect wirelessly. I am pretty sure I followed the school connection instructions correctly, so I think the problem lies in the card and/or driver not being installed correctly. I know I haven't provided a ton of information, but any preliminary help as to how and diagnose the underlying problem would be appreciated.
From a command prompt, use ipconfig to see if the machine can see the network. If You have a dhcp address assigned, then the card and protcol stack are not the issue. If it is not configured, /start/settings/control_panel/network_connections right click on the "intel pro / wireless lan 2100 3A" properties. In the resulting "Wireless Network Connection Properties" dialog box, click on the configure button. On the "intel pro / wireless lan 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter" dialog box, ensure that the "wireless device radio off" is NOT checked. If it is not, uncheck the "Use Default Value" box for both "Ad Hoc Trnsmit Power" and "Power Management". This will ensure the device is "software switched-on" and that you are using the strongest signal it can generate. Click on "OK" and wait a few for the changes to be applied. Try "see" any nearby wireless networks.
