Solved Need help setting up a small network

May 12, 2012 at 14:47:46
Specs: Windows 7, I5

We need to update our network. We currently have 6 computers running Windows 7 64bit. They all share a database that is on one of the systems. However this is not working out so well. It worked great with three systems but now that have added three more it is causing problems. The software company is telling us we need to set up a server and have all the workstations attach to it. What equipment would we need to add to this to get this working?
Server with what operating system and I imagine a switch also.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the Hardware and software requirements of the software:

Hardware Recommendations

MOGO SQL version 15 for multi-users is available in two editions - Business Class and First Class. Business Class is capable of running in smaller computer network environments. First Class is recommended for larger computer networks.

The computers and network at MOGO are maintained by a Microsoft Gold Certified company, Allways, Inc. They have many years of experience with MOGO and can help your practice with the recommended hardware to run MOGO.

For a server operating system for such a small business I would suggest you use SBS (small business server) version.

As to hardware, check out server platforms and look for something that suits your budget. You definitely want it to have a good hardware RAID and lots of RAM.

I didn't read through your entire post but glanced at it quickly. 4 GB's of RAM is not going to be enough. If you have the budget, a good multi core XEON processor with no less than 16 GB's of RAM (I'd go 32 if you have the $$$).

For backup, I'd spend some money on a NAS with RAID capability and load it up with as large hard drives as you can afford.

Pretty much any 10000 Mbps switch will work. Ensure the network interface(s) on your server is also 1000 Mbps. Just ensure you get a switch with enough ports to support your present number of connections with a few extra for growth. In your situation, I'd get a 24 port switch.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

✔ Best Answer

"The software company is telling us we need to set up a server and have all the workstations attach to it"

Hogwash. I would kindly suggest you do not need a server for 6 workstation accesses.

It would be far cheaper to have bought a 7th pc and not use the present pc also as a workstation.

Database server should have 8gig of ram
All should be on gigabit which means you have a gigabit switch.

Since these are window 7 boxes I have to think they came with gigabit ports but you only have a 100mb switch

upgrade the ram and switch plus an additional workstation is all going to be way cheaper that a SBS and its something you can maintain.

Whereas SBS its doubtful you will be able to do that inhouse which means you need to hire somoen on a regular basis to come in and maintain it for you.

You are also looking at a cost under $1200 for wkstation, ram and switch. SBS and hardware is a lot more than that.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.
