Hi there. I am going crazy here trying to figure this out and nothing seems to work. Let me start by giving you a run down of what am I currently working with. And sorry for such a long post but want to give as much info as possible.
Computer A - Desktop PC (XP Home SP2) connected to router via ethernet cable. No problems connectiing to internet.
Router - D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless 108G Gaming Router. Most of the setting are on factory default.
Computer B - Toshiba laptop (XP Home SP2) with Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter.
The problem that I have is that I cannot connect to the internet/doesn't recognize the wireless network I have created.
So the steps that I take. D-Link router has a website that I can configure the options for the router. Now I do all of these changes from Computer A.
1) There is a wizard that lets you "Launch Wireless Security Wizard".
2) Next step is "Name your wireless network". Lets say I call it "Network".
3) I have 4 options here to select my wireless network security settings. They are: WPA2, WPA, choose this if your wireless adapter do not support WPA, and if you don't want to activate any security features.
4) I have been choosing WPA.
5) Next step is I have to create a wireless security password. I do this and the next screen that comes up gives me a rundown of what I setup. It gives me the wireless network name, encryption (and in this case it is WPA-PSK/TKIP (also known as WPA Personal).
6) Reboot the router. After I do this, I write down the password and go to Start > Control Panel > Right click and Open Network Connections, right click properties on the Atheros Network Connection, click on Wireless Networks and add a new Preferred Network. This is all down on the laptop. I have the box checked for "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings".
So when I add a new network,
1) I enter in the Network Name
2) Choose WPA-PSK for Network Authentication
3) Choose TKIP for Data encryption
4) Enter in the Network key
5) Ok and Ok again on the Wireless Network Connection PropertiesAt this point I am stuck and don't know what else to do. The network I created does not show up under "Choose a wireless network" and in the sytem tray, it shows a little monitor with a red 'X' in the lower right hand corner of the monitor. I don't know what else to do. I use to be able to connect when I first got this laptop and router but as of late, I cannot. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I've exhausted all my options. Thank you very much and have a great day.

First of all, disable all the encrytion. You can enable it again later.
Secondly, turn off windows firewall or any other firewalls. You can enable that again at another time too. If Norton is running, delete it and never install it again.
Remember, XP Home is really not for networking, that is, joining a domain but it will see shares and you should be able to route it to the internet.
Finally, make sure your IP address is ok. Try a static IP if DHCP isn't working and make sure that the default gatway is the router's IP and that everything is on the same subnet.
