hey guys
am been trying to make a network so my laptop and my desktop computer can both have internet
now after a week of doing stuff and making it work
i found out the cable modem seems to have some sort of flaw
people have been trying to do what am trying to do
but the modem wont work with two computers for some reason
it will pick one computer and give it internet and the other wont have any internet
i tried a switch and a router and even puting the usb cable to one computer and the ethernet cable to the other(says this can be done on the website, but it wont work)

this cable modem is:sb5101
i am with Optus Australia
i heard theirs firmware updates for it, but if you update it , the optus server will detect it and put back the original firmware or it will make the modem into a brick.

is their a update or something i can do to fix this?
and does any one else have this problem?

maybe i can buy a new modem ?

You should be able to use a SOHO router. What happened when you tried? Were both your PC and laptop able to communicate with each other?

router is the only device you need. Trick is to configure the wan port to mimic the pc/laptop mac address so the modem/isp server thinks its just talking to the single pc. In the router this is usually referred to as mac address cloning.
