Hi guys,

Please bare in mind that I have never networked a machine to another before. So I am extremely new to this.

Here's my problem. I have a PC running Windows 98 with a 3com Etherlink Fast 10/100mb network card.

I want to connect this to my laptop, which is running Windows 98 SE and has a plug-in 3com Network card.

All I want to do is connect the two machines so I can transfer some files from the laptop to the PC. (As I want to format the laptop).

However,

However, I have tried for hours but to no avail. I thought I did everything correctly (and even tried WinMe's home networking wizard thing, but it never worked).

I have one cable that plugs into the back of the PC where the network card is, and that goes into the network card of the laptop.

I have heard there are different types, but I'm clueless as to what mine is.

Basically, I set the options on both pretty much the same, including setting IP's etc.:

WinME
Name: WinME
Group: Home
198.68.0.1
255.255.255.0

Win98 SE
Name: Win98
Group: Home
198.68.0.2
255.255.255.0

However I cannot ever see the other machine. On the Win98 machine, I can see my own machine in the Network Neighbourhood.

Any help would be appreciated hugely.

PS: I did set lot's of other things that I know I was supposed to. For example, sharing out sections of the machines, share-level access control, file and print sharing and so on... still nothing though.

Did you use a crossover cable to connect them directly? You should have. If you bought a packaged cable, it'll likely say CROSS on it. If not, you probably have a regular cable and it won't work unless you're using a hub.

Have you tried to ping? (go to command prompt and type PING XXXXXXX)

Ping 127.0.0.1 on each PC to see if TCP/IP is configured and bound to the NIC.

ping each IP address to see if the PC can see the other one.

ping the NetBIOS name (WinME, Win98).

Sometimes, Windows exhibits some latency in showing other PC's in Network Neighborhood. Don't ask me why. Have you waited awhile after configuring? It can take awhile for another PC to show up sometimes.

What kind of cable are you using? Make sure you have a crossover cable. There is a difference with a cat 5 cable that may have come with the network card. Crossover cable is used between two machines. A straight thru cable is used between machines and a hub. Everything else you try is useless until you are positive that you are using a crossover cable.

It looks like a phoneline and has about 8 pin bits?

However, I do have a hub also and connected it to that, no luck.

Tried the ping, no luck. It looks as though the Win98 is working, as I can see my the Win98 machine in the network neighbourhood, but this is on the Win98 machine.

The WinME shows nothing at all.

Any ideas?

As you say you are 'new' to the whole networking scene...

visit:

http://www.wown.com aka http://www.helmig.com

and have a good read.

Helmig covers all aspects of simple (and not so...) networking - basics upwards. He gives excellent screen-shots and step-by-step instructions.

Other useful 'how to sites...:

http://www.practicallynetworkded.com

http://www.homepclan.com

http://www.techtony.com

Presuming you have NIC's (Network Interface Cards) correctly installed (with their drivers...), the cable between them (if you're not using a hub) has to a cross-over cable (Cat 5 UTP - Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair); if using a hub the all cables will be straight through variety. You install a protocol - NetBeui will be more than adequate for a simple LAN - as long as you do not intend to use the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) item. Also enable File/printer Sharing, and enable a 'Share' on each PC so as to verfiy (and be able to 'see' something) when it's all configured correctly...

NetBeui is the simplest protocol to establish; tcp/ip is 'slightly' more complex, and requires a little more care in setting it up. If you prefer tcp/ip go for it... Helmig covers it (them) all...

ME and '98SE are close cousins and can be regarded as esentially the same OS for purposes of simple networking. By default they will install tcp/ip (not NetBeui).

One other item.

Do not install a PCI-based NIC in the PCI slot immediately adjacent to the AGP slot if using an AGP card as your video card. These two slots share a common IRQ and the NIC will not 'LAN' if installed in the slot adjacent to an occupied AGP slot.

Good luck.

Hi guys,

Here's the latest update. The hub is working fine, I see the green light when it's plugged in.

I can now see both machines in their own network neighbourhood, but not the other machines...

I got the WinME to show up after I installed the NetBIOS protocol.

I already had both machines sharing something or other, to make sure I could see the other machines.

However I still cannot get them to link together. The Win98 machine has a "request timed out" message when I try and ping the same machine.

Obviously it cannot find the WinME machine at this moment of time. I have read all those manuals, but still seem to get stuck.

I still am not sure of what cables I have, but I do know that the machines connected fine from PC to PC (as my brother connected our machines with one cable and two network cards - which is why I know it should work).

Any more info/help always appreciated.

Hi all again,

Righty, both green lights are both visible (only when plugged into the hub). So both PC and Laptop seem to be fine.

However, when attempting to ping from the laptop to the PC, I get a message of Unknown host...

However when pinging the laptop itself, it does reply. So I've managed to sort that out but still cannot seem to link the two together.

I uninstalled the NetBIOS stuff, and tried again from TCP/IP... and this seems the best way in my opinion.

The WinME machine is now showing up properly in it's on My Network Place section.

Still no signs of the other machine though. I checked out "winipcfg" on both, and the cards seem to be setup correctly.

I'm still a little baffled as to why I can't see anything though.

Do I need to set something for the hub? Like an IP for that? (Gateway or something?) I have no idea to go about that though - any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

You don't need a hub for a 2 PC network; just the NIC in each PC and the cross-over cable - that's the hardware side.

Have you tried using NetBeui only; i.e remove all protocols and then install NetBeui alone Also, try re-installing the driver(s) for the NIC's; remove the current installations and then reboot and re-install them? (Are the drivers current/the latest for the NIC's?) This has been known to resolve problems similar to yours.

Also are both cards operating at the same speed?

If your '98 is first edition then there are known issues with it when networking... SE is said to have resolved these...

As advised earlier, have you checked the MoBo (Motherboard) websites for updates on chipsets; these can be an issue in similar problems...

???
