it is time to upgrade our routers here at our house/business. we have 11 computers on the local network, 6 of which access the internet.
we had two netgear routers (one working solely as an access point) the other doing all the routing, the WTG614v6.
things i did not like about the wtg614V6:
we had to constantly power cycle the router, it would konk out on us almost daily... not good for when you have a business. the internet/network is not crucial for our business at all, we do not need it in order to run....
i did not like that there was no option for security when it came to LAN, WAN no problem, both WPA and MAC address control, but with the physical lan, there was nothing, anyone could come in and plug in and have access (of course all compters on the network are password protected, but still, i want protection)

those are the two biggies, the first being the most important, obviously...
another thing im curious about is does a router exist that allows you to control internet bandwith , outward bandwith based on IP of a machine... say we have 3 comptuters...
1 is mine, 2 is dad office, 3 is staff area public...
is it possible to have 1 reside over 2 and 2 over three? so if staff computer 3 is using the internet watching youtube, and computer 2 goes on to download the latest windows update, that computer 2 would get presidence over computer 3, and computer 1 would get presidence over all.
so when computer 1 and 2 are not using the network, computer 3 gets 100%, but if two starts using the network, computer 3 gets 30%, if computer 1 and 2 and 3 are all using, 3 gets 10%, 2 gets 50% and 1 gets 40%
all based on IP static route...

is there such a router out there?
please help
thanks
pj

Chances are there's something wrong with the actual hardware of your present router, which is why you find yourself resetting it so often. Purchasing a new router will likely fix that issue, providing it's a router issue and not an ISP issue.

Your second question, but with the physical lan, there was nothing, anyone could come in and plug in and have access . I doubt you'll find a SOHO router that actually allows you to enable/disable ports. The same can be said for small switches. In order to have this capability built in, you'd likely have to spend more money than you want as it would require Enterprise level equipment. I can offer a suggestion though. Shut off DHCP on the SOHO router and statically assign IP's. This way, someone plugging in to your network physically would have to know what subnet you're using in order to get a valid connection. With DHCP disabled, plugging in a PC that has DHCP enabled will yield nothing in the way of a connection.

another thing im curious about is does a router exist that allows you to control internet bandwith

Again, you aren't likely to find this kind of technology built into a SOHO level piece of equipment. There is a lot of 3'd party software out there that does bandwidth limiting. Some google searches should get you plenty of links to follow.

thanks again curt!
i did some research regarding software/bandwidth limiting, didn't really find anything too useful...
does anyone have any recommendations?
ive heard lots of talk about how it is hard to limit a connection.. without losing/dropping packets...
