My Toshiba Laptop L305 wont access wireless

July 14, 2011 at 14:00:45
Specs: Windows XP

Cannot access wireless w/ my Toshiba Laptop-it is a Satellite L305 purchased 2 years ago. I am staying with some friends for the summer in a rural area-they no longer have Internet service ( Comcast modem is still in basement--are NOT going to reactivate service). The closest WiFi spot is a mile walk away ( Library at a State College). Every day all I get is frustrated as I try and try to access any wireless networks--Linksys is what keeps coming up--but says I am too far away from access point. The "local computer whiz" told me to purchase a Wireless Card-which I will gladly do IF it will enable me to access wireless networks from home. PLEASE HELP Any suggestions at to what, if anything, I can do or purchase to enable me to access
wireless from my "rural home"?? THank you !

The guy is probably right. If your laptop gets the signal from the access point, but can't send a signal to it, you'll see the network but won't be able to connect to it.

You can get a powerful network card or get closer to the wifi AP.

Thanks so much for taking the time to send in a response--the help is much appreciated. I also called Toshiba--they told me to buy ( but cant from them!!) a Belkin Wireless Adapter Card Part # F5D8073. I could not locate it at any retial stores, but did see it on Amazon.com--who I have never ordered with. Any advice at all from anyone with experience on this Belkin adapter or ordering from Amazon.com?? Once again, I thank you for taking the time to send in a helpful response.
