Hi, i want to set up PcAnywhere or likewise and i cant connect to my PC from another location because i cant get my real iP.
Im on a wireless router (netgear mimo), and my network IP is 192.168.1.x and internet IP is say 83.1698.x.x. but all devices on the router use that same address. how do i find or get a direct IP to my PC? in a way that i can just ping my machine or access my own FTP , or remote CP etc...
Thanks

I am sure Symantec's pcanywhere group has a tech paper on what ports you need to forward in your router so you can connect.
Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

If you want your WAN or public ip...open IE and put in www.whatismyip.com it will display your ip address...
If you want the IP address of your computer...Start > Run > CMD...enter
In the black screen enter ipconfig /all
Your IP address will be displayed...

Wanderer,
nothing to do with PCAnywhere in particular,
just using it as an example as to see if its possible to get a direct IP of my PC. any other suggestions?XPUser,
thanks for your professional advice. why do you even bother post somethin that is not even a worthwhile suggestion?
From now on a shall refer to you as XPLoserStevem5000,
Ive done both those and i have my 2 IP's. but what im looking for is a direct IP if possible, from the outside world to my pc.

1. Find out what port(s) PCAnywhere uses to connect.
2. In your router, forward that port to a particular IP Address on your network.
3. Set the client's IP address to that IP Address, instead of "assign IP Addresses Automatically".
You'll also need the IP address used by the router and you get that from the router's configuration menu. You will need to read the manual, as rude as XPUser's reply was, for more specific information. I believe that if you have multiple clients you want to manage you have to set up a separate port and port-forward that to each client at its unique (fixed) IP address.

If you don't want to mess with port forwarding, and you want traffic to go directly to that PC, then put it in your router's DMZ. It won't be behind the firewall anymore, and it won't be secure, but you will be able to access it like a champ. Otherwise, stick with port forwarding and be safer.
