My desktop says I'm not connected when I am?

January 17, 2011 at 22:19:59
Specs: Windows Vista, 1.00 GB
At the lower right corner the icon that shows if you are connected to the internet has a red X over it opposed to saying I am connected to the internet, and I am connected. I my internet through my cable provider and the modem even says I'm connected. It's a desktop. This has been going on for a couple months and it is very aggravating is there any explanation to this and how it can be fixed? I just want the icon to show that I am active. Thank you for all the help.

Do you have more than one way of connecting......does the computer have wireless capabilities as well as cat 5 connection? Does it show more than one device under "Network Adapters" in the device manager?

I don't have wireless capabilities on this desktop, I don't think for the most part. I do have a cat 5 connection cable from the modem to the tower and there isn't any other devices in network adapters. I'm really at wits end right now. My other desktop connected to the same modem is working properly and shows that it is connected. Bugs me very much to stare at this red X. This happened a few months ago when I turned my computer off for about 3 hours and turned it back on and it has been like this since. The performance is great so I don't understand.
