Hi,

I have been reading alot about dual router setups on the internet but im not quite sure if i have the right picture in my head on how to do it.

I have been asked to put together a 3 router network for friends of mine. They specificly said they wanted to keep this setup, so i tried to make a setup on paper and was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is a good configuration.

It concerns a DSL Modem, linked to a non-wireless belkin router. Connected to port 1 of the belkin router, is a netgear router. On the netgear router, on port 1 a computer, and on port 2 is another Belkin router with 2 computers attached to it.

The reason why they have all these routers is because its a fairly large house and there is quite some space in between them.

My question is, will this setup work? I have read that it might be usefull to only let 1 router act as DHCP server.

Im not a star in networks so any help would be appreciated.

You don't use the wan ports on the netgear or 2nd belkin.
You use crossover cables from the main belkin router to the netgear switch port and again from the netgear to the belkin.

This makes the 'routers' switches. dhcp comes from the main belkin router.

Understand the bottom two computers will have to compete for bandwidth up the chain to the main router and internet.

You would get better performance dropping the other two routers and just running longer patch cables [up to 325ft]from the main belkin

Knowing the correct answer and giving a correct answer, are two different things

I am not sure why one has to use a cross-over cable between routers.

I have a wired Linksys router with a wireless Netgear router attached to it as a wired and wireless access point.

I connected the two routers using a regular (non-cross-over) cable between their ports. The DHCP of the Netgear is disabled and a static IP is assined to it (Netgear router).

My setup works fine.
