I can ping google and websites but my default gateway is offline. I cna't log on to msn. I turned off my windows xp firewall and i dun think i have any other firewalls. I turned off Norton Anti virus 2001.

If your default gateway were really offline, you wouldn't be able to even so much as ping anything on the other side of it....much less connect to anything beyond it.
Since you can ping websites, the next troubleshooting step is to try to connect to a website (or websites) with a web browser. If you can't connect, then your problem is likely a DNS issue.
Is this a home network?
What type of hardware is your gateway? Is it a router, a switch, a multihomed PC with ICS enabled?
If a home network, are your clients getting their TCP/IP settings via DHCP or are they statically assigned?
Another thing you can do before replying is open a command prompt window and type the following command:
ipconfig /all
Look at the DNS entry. Is it your ISP's DNS address? Depending on your setup, it probably should be unless you are running a home network with a server that handles your DNS for you....in which case, that DNS should be forwarded to your ISP's DNS servers and your clients should point at your DNS server itself.
