This annoying error message keeps popping up on 2 of my workstations - both are Win98, using TCP/IP on NT4.0 network...

As soon as the normal looking Microsoft Networking login screen pops up after you turn on the computer - another window comes up over it saying "The username cannot be found" - before you've had a chance to type anything in. You can click okay and it drops you back into the login screen and changes the username back to Default. After that, you can select Default and change it to your username, add your password and it logs in fine.

I've tried reinstalling drivers, removing the nic cards, and installing different nic cards - so it has to be something in Win98 - I'm thinking a registry key that causing the annoying message - any ideas?

Thanks in advance for help...

if it's a reg problem this might help. reboot computer and hold f8 key and go to command prompt from menu. run scanreg/fix from windows/command dir. ater this is done reboot into windows and from start menu select run and sfc and from that menu select default which I believe is scan for altered files. have your win98 cd also in your cdrom when running sfc that is where it will pull from to replace altered files

it's not necessarily that something is "wrong" with the registry (so sfc won't work) but I suspect there's an incorrect key, or value that's making it automatically login before the user has a chance to enter their password. That's what I'm looking for...
