MPLS and what is it

Can someone please explain to me what MPLS is. I know what it stands for but what does it do. What is its place in business

MPLS allows you to create Layer 2 and 3 tunnels. It works at Layer 2.5 and resembles switching more than routing.

An IP packet entering a network is tagged by a label. Once tagged, intermediate routers don't have to look at any IP info. They merely swap the label and switch it to next hop. Just before the packet reaches its destination, the label is popped and native IP packet is sent to the destination.

Think of MPLS as a mix of ATM and IP networks.

What is its use in Business? The answer is it depends what you business is.
