Motorola router and SBC Yahoo DSL

I recently bought a Motorola Wireless Broadband Router WR850G to network my mother's host PC to my father's laptop and when I connect the laptop to the router to try and ping a response to the network, I get only limited connectivity. The laptop can't access the internet at all. I've tried manually entering the IP address and information, but everytime I reboot, SBC Yahoo DSL sends a new IP address. Is there anyway to work around this issue to network these computers?
