Comment: Hi guys, i was wondering is there a software that shows you which applications are accessing the internet connection and how to disable or stop them. I disabled my antivirus software(panda07), windows and Spybot automatic updates just to test but still there seems to be an activity (send/receive) as if im using the internet. gf

Reply: (edit)Keep in mind that your interface will send data at regular intervals to test to ensure it still has connectivity. This might be all you're seeing. Anyhow, yes, there's a lot of monitoring software. You could start with Wire Shark and monitor the packets flowing through the interface.

Reply: (edit)Yeah I know but even when the computer is idle and I'm not using the internet, it will still send and receive megabytes of data as if it's downloading something. Anyways I'll try Wire Shark and see how it works, thanks. gf

Reply: (edit)Put that AV and firewalls back on! Never turn them off. As above install wireshark and capure a minute or so. Then look at all that goes on. You will be suprised on how much is going on behind the scenes. Block all unused ports at router. The firewalls help detect applications that access. Best practices help avoid issues. Use the most of them you can. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Reply: (edit)I haven't yet used Wireshark, but I understand it is a spinoff from Ethereal. Ethereal is pretty easy to figure out. WGT

Reply: (edit)Yes, it is ethereal....or was.......lol. If you have that much data transferring you may have a trojan or bot residing on your PC that someone else controls. I'd be antivirus and antispyware scanning immediately if it were my PC.
