Comment:

We are providing a public unsecured wireless access point for yachts visiting the local marina. This is working fine via a wireless router connected to a single port of a Draytek router which provides a VLAN function so as to keep the public side of the LAN completely separate from the rest of our LAN.

This works fine but we have no logging or filtering in place which makes us a little bit twitchy.

What we'd like to be able to do is monitor who is connecting to the public access point and where they are going to, in case we need to put in place some kind of filtering or blocking.

Would a proxy server provide this? We can dedicate a PC to this task and would appreciate suggestions as to software and LAN configuration.

Cost is important as this is a non-profit-making service.

Might start at the untangle.com site. Can run in a virtual machine or old computer. Other type systems exist, many are pre-made on vmware's virtual machine site. Other's exist in hardware form too.
