OS: w xp home
CPU/Ram: 2 gig celeron, 256 MB
Product: dell dim 2350
Comment:

have a macbook pro connected via crossover cable to WinXP home on Dell PC. Mac sees Dell, Dell doesn't see mac. Tried to add a network place on the Dell, neither com port nor serial work, no option for ethernet cable. Mac says,
"tell other comps to find me at afp://xxx.xxx.x.xx/", but windows box can't find that, not by search, not in address bar. What am I missing here?
thx

Is a firewall running on the Dell? What do you see under TCP/IP on the Mac? Have you tried to ping the Dell from the Mac? You would be better off with a router and forget the crossover cable.

There are two basic ways to share files. One is appletalk and the other is cifs/sabma.

Opps, guess you can't use appletalk anymore.

You have to use smb or ftp to access the macbook or get a third party support for appletalk.

Here's some things which could be going wrong:

1. workgroup name is different on the Mac.
2. samba service isn't started.
3. Dell firewall is blocking netbios ports 137 and 445.
4. Windows is just being spiteful and sulking because you aren't just using Windows network.

TCP port 139 and 445 open.
can ping the xp from mac, can't ping mac from pc.
mac can access the internet via crossover cable plugged into airport express, but can't see the xp files. mac can see the xp if directly connected by crossover (ethernet) cable but ca'nt access the net. i have enabled Windows Sharing on mac.
What am i missing? (read all the articles, thanks!)
