mac file share over vpn

does anyone have experience making a mac file shares accessible across a vpn connection? i have two independent lans (nt4.0 servers) connected in a domain trust through a vpn. both networks have about 20 macs a piece but neither have a seeded zone. i know i can route appletalk after creating zones but i do not want to put both lans in the same appletalk zone because i have a fear that it will cause chooser problems. any suggestions?
