hello! at my university i have 1 network point....and i want to connect 2 devices, an xbox and a laptop...so i suppose i need a router....now the thing is i can only register one MAC address...so if i register the router then i guess that is it, i have a sheet to fill in which also asks if it is a laptop or pc, no option for router....and it says i have to download the automatic configurations script and something to do with proxy if that is any help....ha....so if i register just the router do i have to register the xbox and laptop still? also can i change my laptops mac address as my xbox says i can change its mac address.....
2.also if i can change my mac address do you think it would be possible to just register one mac address and use that address on both and only use one at a time or not? also any ideas about the automatic configuration scrcipt? how would i get that on my xbox would i have to open it up and manually enter the settings?
3.finally, i am not sure but some people at other universitys say the ports for the xbox to connect online are blocked.......which would suck....i am not sure if this is the case yet but....say they are is there a way around it....please anyone help answer anything!! i have 24 hours then i have to go back there and will have no internet until i sort out what i am going to register! hope it makes sense!! thanks in advance!!

Shouldn't have to. They're only going to see your router. Bear in mind they're probably using NAT on their interface as well. With your router, this would then be a double NAT configuration, which breaks a lot of applications.

"and it says i have to download the automatic configurations script and something to do with proxy if that is any help"

That's not a problem.

"also can i change my laptops mac address"

Why would you want to with a router?

"some people at other universitys say the ports for the xbox to connect online are blocked.......which would suck....i am not sure if this is the case yet but....say they are is there a way around it"

Not without a severe degradation in service to the point it's not worth even doing. In a word then, no.

wow thanks! that is very useful, i need to go and get a router! when you say "NAT configuration, which breaks a lot of applications." like what applications? would a switch be any better?
also

"""also can i change my laptops mac address"

Why would you want to with a router?""

say i didnt have the router and i just wanted to keep switching over the cables and only use on device at a time, then if they had the same mac address i could register them both with one mac address if you see what i mean....anyway thank you so much!! it is so hard having no internet and no xbox online for 5 days ha!!

"like what applications?"

NAT breaks some as is, in particular IPSec Virtual Private Networks unless the router supports IPSec passthrough, etc.

When you have TWO NAT devices, such as your university using NAT to get to the internet, and then a router should you choose to use one, breaks a whole lot more. Many PC games won't run as well as many other apps to the point that double NAT as a rule shouldn't be used unless absolutely necessary, and you're willing to accept that many things don't work with it.

"would a switch be any better?"

If you use a switch, your university will see you have two devices. Each device will need its own IP address in the univerisity's network. If they only allow you to have one device, this is not an option for you.

"say i didnt have the router and i just wanted to keep switching over the cables and only use on device at a time, then if they had the same mac address i could register them both with one mac address if you see what i mean"

The XBox I would assume unless you hack it, you can't change the MAC address, so most likely you would need to be able to change your MAC address on the PC to the same MAC address as the XBox.

Unrelated to your initial question but still very important:

Make absolutely sure you use a software firewall on your PC since you are wide open to people within your university campus network if you don't use a router. Quite honestly, you should use a software firewall even if you have a router, too.

believe it or not, i was looking around in the xbox network settings menu and it said something like "your isp may require you to enter a....something something mac address....no joke...it was something along them lines, so i like clicked it and i could enter in any numbers and letters..

ok, thank you so so much! i will be back in 5 days unless i get my connection sorted by then end of this week but it is unlikely because it takes atleast 3 days to activate my account!! thanks again! i really appreciate it!!

right i am here, i didnt bring my xbox this week because i didnt have a router and well anyway i have finally got my laptop registered, i asked at the help desk about ports being blocked, they didnt know, so i got given a phone number and called it, they say i can fill in as many forms for devices as i want, i can have a router, but er....i was searching on there portal thing and in their forum there are some people from this time last year asking for ports to be unblocked and someone asking for xbox live to be allowed, and they say it is non academic...........so er...i dont know about this year, but i might email them and ask them, skype is working (VOIP software) msn messenger is also, but webcam is not and msn voice wont for some reason.....which really really sucks, now does anyone know how to find out which ports are blocked and does anyone know which ports need unblockingfor xbox, and for webcam...and anyone think that if i phone xbox live custome support they will tell me how to get round it lol, anyone have any ideas to get round it, someone must have some idea..... please help thanks in advance, also it seems weird skype works but msn voice and msn webcam dont....

"now does anyone know how to find out which ports are blocked"

For unsolicited incoming, try grc.com. Simply do a port scan there.

For outgoing or solicited incoming, call 1-800-UR-ON-UR-OWN. :-)

"does anyone know which ports need unblockingfor xbox"

Microsoft does.

"anyone think that if i phone xbox live custome support they will tell me how to get round it"

Do you really need me to tell you the answer to this?

And there probably isn't a way around this that would work and keep your lag down.

the thing i don't get is how voice chat is blocked in msn yet not in skype? i would have thought it would have been the same ports for both....do you think it is much work for the network guy to unblock the ports? yet again...thanks soooooooooo much, you are very very helpful! i really appreciate it!!

"Stealth There is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that a port (or even any computer) exists at this IP address!" for pretty much all the ports.......it did not say closed....so er....does that sound good or bad?

"someone said use https instead.....????"

That would greatly increase lag due to the encryption and decryption process, even if you could somehow pull it off, to the point this is not viable.

"do you think it is much work for the network guy to unblock the ports?"

Depending on how the application works, it's either impossible for technical reasons, or it's a conscious decision to block it. Either way, difficulty in the procedure is not the issue.

"does that sound good or bad?"

Bad if your application depends on unsolicited incoming connections. Otherwise, it's irrelevant. I'm betting on irrelevant. Most of what you want to do probably relies on solicited incoming and outgoing connections. If the application depends on unsolicited incoming connections, it's impossible for your network admins to help you unless they're gonna let the traffic go to your computer and only your computer. I am a network engineer. If I worked there, there's no way I'd do that for you, no offense. That's a political hot potato. Only takes someone else to ask, "HOW COME HE'S ALLOWED AND NOT ME?!?!?"

ok, i still havent managed to contact them yet, i will try tomorrow, but i have been playing around, apparently i am connected through a non UPnP firewall.....i know this is yet another stupid idea, but is there a way to like have the xbox connect through the ports on my home pc and like have remote access or something....if you get what i mean lol....i know it sounds dumb but if the ports at my home are not blocked then would it work or would there be loads of lag, also the other thing i don't quite get, they say my connection is 200x faster than dial up....so 10mbps, although when i do a broadband speed test its says 32000kbpss and sometime 25,000..........so i am like 3 x faster than they say ha........oh no xbox live is so annoying!! thanks again for your help!!

but its actually possible? sweeeeeet!!! the connection does not seem that fast, i have 2mbps at home at i have something like 30mbps here but downloading things its only like 2 x faster at most, and loading web pages i can hardly tell...i kept searching for other port scanning things earlier and some of them said they cannot detect anything ha, also another thing, when i was on the phone to some person at the help desk a few days ago they said there is no way of changing mac addresses but if you search on google there are loads of sites telling you to to to the registry and other random things....who is right google or the person on the help desk?
i think lag would be ok, i can put up with it, just the remote access ports might be blocked? ha....i dont know though if they are or not but i would hope not!! thanks again, you are really helpful!!
