Comment:

Have two computers connected to a router, connected to cable internet. If either of the computers is restarted, it will connect to an "unidentified network", but have only local access, while the other one has a fine connection.

This also occurs overnight if the computer is left on, but with no activity. If one is left downloading over night, it works fine in the morning, but the other has only local access on an "unidentified network"

Both computers are constructed with identical parts (other than the DVD drive). This issue has occured with a both a recently purchased d-link and linksys router.

The motherboard is the ASUS P5Q Pro, and the network adapter is the Atheros AR8121/AR8113 PCI-E Ethernet Controller. I've set the Power Manager for the card to alternately allow and disallow the computer to turn off device, and that makes no difference.

Any suggestions?

You have given us all the information needed except the most important thing, the model number of the router.

The behaviour you describe is what you would expect when you have a modem connected through a switch and no router. Make sure you have DHCP and NAT turned on. Check ipconfig /all from the command line on the computer that is working correctly and post the information.

Also - Once you get the Router Model

Update its firmware

Reset the Routers default settings

Reconfigure (if necessary for internet)

Test for overnight

If it stays up, then continue configuring your router, security, port forwarding, ect.

If it doesn't stay up - Check your cabling, are you running all straight through cable? Most routers have auto-sensing ports, but I have seen crossover cables give some weird connections when hooked to a router.

Thanks for any input.

Sorry for late reply, long day at work.

First, I apologize for not including current router model. I didn't think it really mattered as it's occurred with two separate brands of router.

Current router is Linksys WRT54G2 V1. The firmware has been completely updated and drivers installed. The prior was some DLink EBR 2310. I've been through with tech support on their end; and their solution is "we'll send you a new router" or "what's wrong with just hard resetting after you shut down?"

I've tested default and my configuration and their tech support configuration for at least 48 hours each. All the cables are straight-through and NOT crossover.

Here is the ipconfig /all output from one of the computers. Note: I have IPv6 turned off on this computer because an initial issue I was having was the computer finding multiple networks. The solution to that was turning IPv6 off and using >route delete 0.0.0.0 every time I reconnected to the network. The other computer did not have this issue for some reason.

This personally sounds more like an issue on the PC itself -
I would check BIOS settings for the LAN settings -
After your PC restarts, if you disable the LAN and re-enable it, does it work?
Have you updated Windows / Drivers for your NIC?

Thanks for any input.
