losing connection to cable modem repeatedly

Specs: Windows XP, 4Gigabytes at desktop
Every few minutes my WGR614v6 loses connection to the cable modem though the wireless in-house is strong. Cable modem being reset does not help. Resetting netgear router brings us back online but only for a few minutes. Have replaced power supply to router and it is still occurring.
We have a desktop and 2 laptops online. Also, the notebooks always drop to 18mbps while the desktop stays at 54mbps. HELP!

I had a netgear router a few years back and it behaved a bit like your description. Would intermittently drop connection and a power cycle of the router would usually restore function. after trying a number of cables to eliminate that as a possibility I was left with the router itself being the faulty device. I replaced it with a D-Link and haven't had a problem since.

First, check for more up-to-date firmware for your router. If there is more recent than what's on it now, update your firmware and see if that doesn't fix the issue.

If it doesn't (or you already had the most up-to-date firmware installed) then try resetting the unit to factory defaults (info on how to do that will be in the manual).

If that doesn't fix the issue, the last thing I would do is contact your ISP and have them check to see if the modem is the problem. If they're sure the modem is fine, you likely need to replace your router.
