losing cable connection through router

I'm using cable through Cox and more and more frequently the connection gets dropped. The only way I can get it working again is to turn off the computer, flip the switch to the power strip (power cycle my modem and router), then turn everything back on. When I lose the connection I can ping the LAN but nothing on the www. Tried using ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, but no luck. Tried assigning my local ips statically rather than having DHCP do it, again no luck. I've always had this problem but it used to be uncommon, now it's pretty much everyday. Getting very annoying! Anybody have any ideas?

For what its worth, I have exactly the same problem with Cox in Northern Virginia; I too am trying to figure out what is going on. Here, the problem intensified soon after Cox dropped RoadRunner and 'upgraded' their system to high-speed digital.
