Comment: I am having a problem with a wireless connection between my desktop and my laptop. They are networked, but it is REALLY slow to transfer data. If I try to open a shared file in one computer that is on the other, I often get a "Not responding error". I did a ping test from each to the other using wireless g, and the average time for the laptop to the desktop was 1403ms. For the desktop to the laptop it was 2831ms. I have used the laptop in other places, and it seems much faster. The network card in the desktop is a Netgear WG311. The Laptop has a Dell 1370 Mini PCI card. I have removed all the extra protocols and tried some registry tweaks. It is still REALLY slow. I do have WEP but don't beleive that should cause such a drastic problem. When I try to open a folder on the desktop, I get the searching flashlight for quite a while. Anyone have any suggestions of what I can do or where the problem might be.

Reply: (edit)This is a peer to peet network, so there is no router. The laptop has a built in wireless card, Dell 1370. Yesterday, I transfered a 12MB file, and although the estimate was that it was to take 7 minutes, it took almost 30 minutes.....I would have been quicker to download it with dial up! Something is definitely wrong.

Reply: (edit) Yeah, ad-hoc networks are always pretty lame, I have run a PC through another PC and it was slow, but not quite as slow as you are reporting, and the two cards were the same model. I know it's the obvious solution, but a router will really speed things up, even a cheap one

Reply: (edit)Hi: I have found that the long ping times are actually dependant on whether there is a load on the network....in other words, when I am doing any sort of transfer the ping times are long. When the network is idle, the ping times are usually less than 4ms. Sorry...I just found this out yesterday. However, transfer speeds and loading of files and folders are both very very long over the network. I am not able to use a router, as I only have a dial up connection. I have a router, but when I use it, it wants to be the thing that connects to the internet, and I have to use the modem in my main computer. I have internet connection sharing. When I have connected the router, I have not found a way to connect using the modem.....the router seems to screw this up.
