1. Create user account(s) on the win2k server that you want the win98 machines to use.

If the server is NOT running Active Directory, skip to step 3

2. In the network control panel of each win98 machine, get properties for Client for Microsoft Networks. Select "Log on to Windows NT domain" and enter the name of the server's domain. Click OK.

3. Set the Primary Network Logon to Client for Microsoft Networks.

4. Now when you logon to any of the win98 machines, use the credentials of any of the user accounts you created on the server.

About the server's domain do I just put the
name for e.g. Mother or Mother.xxx or
fred.Mother.xxx in the Windows NT domain on Win98 PC Which is right? fred.Mother.xxx is
the full computer name listed in server's
and also the .xxx can it be
.xxx or does it need to be .com or what?
Now my network is just a home network.

Next question,I have a domain, server is running Active Directory.
How and where do I setup credentials of the user accounts that I setup created on the server.

Let me say this I setup the server domain by
the insruction's on a web sit, that's how I got this for but, I do not know how to setup
credentials on server.

In the example you gave,

fred = hostname (or 'computer name')
Mother = domain name
xxx = toplevel domain

For the purposes of what you're doing, Mother is the name of the domain, and this is what you should enter as the domain on the win98 machines.

Any user account you create on the server has a username and password...these are its "credentials". Once you configure a win98 machine by following steps 1-3 in response#2 you can login to it using the credentials of any user account that exists on the server.

To create new user accounts on the server, click on start->programs->administrative tools->active directory users and computers. Expand the tree on the left side of the window and right-click the Users folder. Select new->user. Provide a username, password, and any additional info you want. The username and password can now be used on the win98 machines.

Thank's for sticking with me zippy.
I can now see Win98 machine,after I enabled
guest/user and put Win98 machine name in
account.
Here what it look's like
(User logon name) same as Win98 machine name.
(right across from it say's) @Mother.xxx
(under @Mother.xxx it say's) Guest
(under Account options)it has ck mark in
User can not change password and ck in Password never expire's
Now I dont see where to put a "password"
in guest properties.
Now when I open shared folder in Win98 machine I get Access is denied.
Also how about that question (.xxx or what)
in "Response Number 2"
I do thank you a lot zippy, I hope I not over
working you.

Sorry to barge in here but I found this thread while searching google. Does anyone no how to enable 98 clients to see the directory? I have installed the 98 tools from the support/client folder on the server CD, but still can't view the active directory. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You'l have to install the active directory client for win9x from the windows 2000 server CD. But I also have a question: something weird is happening, I've just installed Windows ME on a machine and set it up to logon to my domain, when promted I type the username and password and then it says the password is wrong but i'm sure the password is correct. Does anyone know how this could happen?
