linux/xp network - name problem

Here is my problem:
I can't ping my linux box from my xp box by hostname. I can ping by ip. I have no problem pinging the xp box from the linux box by hostname. My hostname is set on the linux box, but xp doesn't seem to know it. This probally is something really obvious. I'm a networking stupid. Your help will be appreciated.
