linux/xp network - name problem

Thanks for stopping by.

Here is my problem:

I can't ping my linux box from my xp box by hostname. I can ping by ip. I have no problem pinging the xp box from the linux box by hostname. My hostname is set on the linux box, but xp doesn't seem to know it. This probally is something really obvious. I'm a networking stupid. Your help will be appreciated.

pretty sure the OS deal with DNS differently.

guess have a brose on the web for how linux & xp treat DNS

How do you ping from linux/unix to xp/win ME.
