I test my broadband speed using speakeasy.net using both Windows XP Pro & Suse Linux Pro 9.3. With Linux I get 6+ Mbps. With Windows I only get 4.3 Mbps. Same PC - dual boot with separate hard drives (same brand & speed HD). Why is my Windows connection slower ? I have a coleague at work who pulls 6 Mbps with XP Pro.

This is a thread that can go on forever as does the debate between open source and MS.
My guess is the xp firewall.
But lets face it. Any flavor of linux doesn't have the overhead of MS which is what I would figure is contributing to the slowness.

How about doing a network traffic capture on the XP box? Good chance that XP machine is maybe spyware infested, has programs set to check for updates and even autodownloading updates, etc.

I agreee with Rence. I recently installed Mandrake 9.2 with win 2000 Pro NT as dual partition. I have a broadband connection too and the pages in Linux load in a jiffy whereas in windows it takes more time. Becoz of some compatibility issues i keep using both versions of OS. But certainly very happy with the speed in Linux 9.2 in comparison to Win 2000 PRO NT. Jagannathan Balaji
