hi,
i plan to order Verizon Dsl and set up home network with Linksys wireless router. my question is: what is the diference between wireless-b and wireless-g? are they compatible? i can buy wireless-b router(cost $99.99)from Verizon, but i don't want to buy from them because i can buy somewhere else and save about $40.00. any suggestion be very appreciated.Kent

I'll bet that the Linksys website would tell you the difference pretty quickly.
I believe that the main difference is that -b runs wireless at something like 11mbs (megabytes per second) and -g runs wireless at 52 or 54mbs.

thank you Don. i have one more qestion about wireless 2.4Ghz. i've heard some one has problem with 2.4 GHz wireless phone at home while they are using the wireless router. is that true?
Kent

Yes Kent, that is true. Also with some type of microwaves operate at that frequency....Your wireless settings have 11 different channels that you can send and receive your information. Usually your phone has multi channels and if there is a conflict it will simply just switch channels.
So to overview, there is a 1 and 11 chance (thats how many channels wireless has) that it could conflict if they operate at the same frequency. I personally have my portable phone and wireless speakers and my wireless router at the 2.4 frequency. I could go on about the differences with -b and -g but g is infact the upgrade, take a look at either dlink, 3com, linsys, belkin etc to find a router that suits your needs.

Just to add one more point, Yes wireless B and G are usually compatible (G is backwards compat.) however you will only get the speed of the slowest component (i.e. if your router is wireless B you will only get 11MBs with no speed advantage provided by your G components).

Also if you are just useing it to access the internet then it isn't going to matter if its "B" or "G" , the slowest link in it all will always be your broadband connection , most of which are at most 3 mbps . If you plan on sharing a lot of files across your network between pc's then get "G" .
