Have a linksys WRT54G wireless router. I was just given a static IP address by my ISP and tried to enable it in the setup with the given settings but when I try to save them I get the following error: The IP address and gateway is not at same subnet mask.

but that's not the IP your ISP sent you, right? Because that isn't a routable IP, it's only an internal one.

Huh???
If the new static Ip is already filled in, what exactly are you trying to set up? Also,192.168.1.1? Are you sure that's the address, not 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.254 to reach the router?

I'll try and explain this the best I can. I must not be making my question clear. I received a static IP from my ISP. In my linksys router setup under connection type I have been using PPOE prior to receiving a static IP. I wanted to change that to static IP. I have my static IP internet address, 255.255.255.0 subnet, the gateway my ISP provided all under internet connections. My local IP address under router IP is 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. When I click on save changes thats when I get the error, "The IP address and gateway is not at same subnet mask." Thanks for all the replies so far.

The 192.168.1.1 addreess should be configured automatically - its the internal ip of the router... so basically if you are able to - press and hold the reset button and it will set it back to this address...

can't remember but can you not totally disable PPOE? This may be the part throwing up an error not the internal ip... Try doing one thing at a time..

If things can go wrong they probably will

I have and am currently using PPOE. I have no problems with it now. I just thought since I have a static IP now, that I would change the intenet setting from PPOE to static. I can not do that without getting the error message I stated above. Since I dont have any problems and its causing too much trouble to solve it, I will just leave it as is.

The ISP assigns the customer* the Static IP Address, *(Customer= Router).
The Router assigns Internal IP addresses to all networked PC's connected to it, the computer/s do, or should not have a static IP Address, unless directly connected to the ISP provided Router.
