I found on manual that to send files in ICQ within a BEFSR11 1-Port Cable/DSL Router needs to do this:
"ICQ menu-> preference -> connections tab->
check "I am behind a firewall or proxy " and set the firewall time out to 80 seconds in firewall setting, then Internet user can send file to user behind router for the fist time connection"

How about msn messenger, I can't send files in messenger too.

any help?

Since installing the Linksys BEFSR41 V.2 router, I've not been able to do pc-to-pc voice chat. My contact can hear me clearly but I cannot hear her, neither can I initiate the call. When she places the call it works to the extent I speak to her but she replies to me in writing, in chat mode. Otherwise, all else works. Same problem with MSN Messenger - lost ability to do pc to pc calls after Linksys.

For ICQ, I also saw quoted para in the manual but don't see where/how to set firewall to time out in 80 seconds. Have you done it? How? Also not sure if this will cure my problem. Have you had same experience? How did you set firewall to time out? I'm using ICQ 2000b version.

I've got the same situation with my Linksys and ICQ... I can receive files sent by others, but cannot connect out to send anything myself. I've tried forwarding a range of ports in my Linksys and setting ICQ to use that range, but it didn't help.
Never tried to use msn for file transfer, etc., but I assume it is the same thing...
Let me know if you solve this, please!

This is the documentation that was available at linksys techsupport site that was taken from MSN, I am afraid it is bad news:

P R O B L E M
My router using NAT [Network Address Translation] will not work with the File transfer or Voice connections of MSN Messenger.
S O L U T I O N
The following excerpts are from Microsoft's support page:

'Client computers that use a NAT router are not able to use MSN, The Microsoft Network Messenger Service version 3.0 program to transfer files or establish voice connections. '

'This problem occurs because MSN Messenger file transfer and voice features do not work through NAT routers because there is no NAT editor to correctly translate the IP header information.'

This is a software limitation of MSN Messenger, and the Linksys routers will not be able to bypass this, until a NAT editor will be available for the protocols used.

FOR ALL OF YOU HAVING TROUBLES WITH MSN MESSENGER AND LINKSYS ROUTER:
Try to set your computer as the DMZ Host in your router advanced configuration BEFORE initializing Messenger. I also suggest a reboot to re-initialize your connection to internet (That is what I do).
If this doesn't work see for a firmware upgrade at Linksys, I recently got mine upgraded with a version that "supports" Messenger, but still I have to be DMZ Host. BECAREFUL to get the upgrade specified for your router and no other.
For the BEFSR41 get version 1.39, I don't know for others.

Hi, i bought a linksys cable/dsl router 2 weeks ago. Problem with it is that, i can send chat requests and files via ICQ, but cannot receive chat or files.. Msn doesn't work either. I cannot use netmeeting also.

We have 3 computers using this router to connect to the internet so, we want all of these computers to be able to receive files and chat requests.. Thats why we cannot use DMZ host, cause as far as i know it only allows only one computer to have those abilities..

Thanks in advance.

I got MSN messenger to send files and receive without disabling DHCP service and WITHOUT DMZ. DMZ is not a desirable thing to do, it makes you vulnerable through port attacks. Under Advanced settings for the router goto IP Forwarding: Enable ports 1868 and the port range 6891-6901 or 6890-6999 if you like. Then goto Port Triggering and do the same. Then reboot. Before you reboot I have the PC using MSN assigned a STATIC IP because file transfers didnt work at first until I did that. The static IP NEEDS TO BE IN THE PROPER RANGE BASED IN THE DHCP OF THE ROUTERS ADDRESS 192.168. xxx...etc. GOOD LUCK, email me if you have questions.

I cannot seem to have MSN Messenger work for voice and video even thru a DMZ, I found some hope on the horizon, but would love to find a temporary solution. Read more..

MSN Messenger supports something called UPnP which is essentially a NAT translator I think... in any case Linksys announced (http://www.linksys.com/press/press.asp?prid=45) they will support UPnP. A recent call to their tech support told me that by the end of the year (2001) the firmware will be released which supports this. Then we should be able to all chat with audio and video thru Linksys.

One thing is that linksys routers will support UPNP. Have a look at this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/techinfo/deployment/natfw/default.asp

It seems that, in order to use UPNP sucessfully, your ISP gateway routers (if they are NAT), must also support UPNP.

Why can't technology be more standarized!!!!!
