Had this problem for ages and no one ever seems to know what it is but ill try again.

Got a linksys router befsr41 that locks up sometimes when im playing games, more so when my brother is playing at the same time. I only regain conn to by pulling the power.

Im on blueyonder cable 2mb using onboard networkcards but i had the same problem with pci SMC ones. ive tried different cables, updating firmware etc ..seems to happen when theres a lot of uploading going on so for games with low net usage like wow it never happens.

can i get some recommendations for a new router since ill probably just do that (again) ..D link gaming one sounds HOT AND CREAMY LIKE CHEESE ON RADIATOR

You have checked and updated your router, but have you checked your modem and the Cable signal quality?

A bad cable, loose connection, electrical interference, etc. can cause problems with the communications link. Lost DNS update request by the router or ones that receive incorrect data can cause the router to appear to hang, by causing them to connect to the wrong IP addresses. In these cases this error or "hang" will last until you power cycle the router or until the DNS information "times out". Not sure how long this takes but it can be hours.

One thing you can do, is when it hangs like this, wait overnight and see if it starts working. If it does, it is a good indication that the problem is really a communications data error on the Cable link and/or an ISP problem.

If there is a bad cable connector or bad cable, the modem has to use more power to transmit its data. This over heats the connection the more data that is sent, and the modem. This can cause failures until it cools off (the modem and/or the bad connection). Have more than one splitter between the modem and the outside Cable can also cause signal quality problems. You should only be using a low loss high quality splitter for Cable modem communications, not splitters sold for TV's.

Depending on who supplied the modem and owns it and the brand, you can access the modem internal status. Linksys modems have this.

Should bring up the page if it is available from your modem. Under Signal, you want the SNR to be above 25. And the Upstream Power to be below 45 dBmV. A low SNR tells you there is noise on the line for some reason. A high Upstream power causes overheating and often indicates a damaged cable or bad connection. In addition the Downstream Power should be near 0.00 dBmV, and it below -40.00 dBmV is will not work well.

So before blaming your router for hanging, make sure it is not a data signal problem causing it.

Reply:

Signal to Noise Ratio 35 dB
Power Level 43 dBmV
Power Level 0 dBmV(was 1 yesterday)

thx for the reply .. but im still lost..the overheating thing sounds plausible as often the conn will be fine then after a long amount of play it will cut out, sometimes multiple times in the space of 5minutes but does this mean a faulty isp cable line or one of my network wires being naughty. ..or has satan taken up residence in my modem.

ive put up with it for like a year ITS GIVING ME A TUMOR

o dear i left out this problem does not occur when the modem is directly plugged into the pc so i cna play for hours or be on p2p progs with a huge ammount of connections (that breaks it aswell) ...and refreshing server lists quickly for extended periods or at high rate of refresh
