I'm having some serious problems with my Ethernet Cable/DSL 4-port Switch router (Linksys Model # BEFSR41). Oftentimes it simply drops my cable conection for no given reason. The only way to get it to reconnect my computer is by reinstalling the router. Sometimes it will last for days before needing a new reinstall, but sometimes it happens as quickly as 5 minutes apart. I would much rather figure out a way to fix it without having to go through the lengthy reinstall everytime. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it a lot. I'm to the point of just taking it back and getting a different brand of router.

What do you have to reinstall? The router should hold its setting. The most you would need to do is turn it off and back on. I have used the same model router and it has been on for almost 21 months connected to a cable modem. I think it has been reset at most 2 or 3 times. I have another wireless Linksys model connected to DSL. It use to disconnect but the problem as (1) the phone line and (2) the power adapter connection to the DSL modem. So far the routers have not been a problem. To fix the DSL I changed the phone line from the outside connection to the modem. (It was 15 to 20 years old.) The speed almost doubled. Apparently line noise was causing the disconnects. The power adapter connector was intermittent, so I just soldered the connections permanently. A friend had a problem with his signal through a cable modem. The problem was the cable signal in the neighborhood. All the routers I have installed work and are still working. I also have a router connected to another router to separate two networks.

Yes, please explain the "reinstall" procedure you have to do? I to have the same router and a Linksys modem on a Cable network.

I had problems with the Cable signal quality at first and had to replace the cables and all the old connectors in the house.

Once a week or so the Cable ISP will drop their connection (I can not ping their DNS) for various reasons. Often when this happens, I have to power off the modem and router for a few seconds to reset them and then reboot the system. Sometimes when this happens it takes quite awhile before I can access the ISP's DNS servers. Sometimes I have to call their service desk to get the Internet access working again. But these are NOT router problems, they are ISP problems.

But often it will go weeks with any ISP problems.

But I never have any router problems, where two systems on the local network can not communicate with each other.

What firmware level is your router. There have been some recent updates for security fixes.

Thanks for the help guys. When I say "reinstall" I mean that the only way I can get my router to complete the connections to the other computers that are online is to put the CD in and go through the set up procedure. I have had the problem of my modem going dead, but when I reset that the router will pick back up the connection. But when the router does this, the only way I've found to make it work again is to reinstall, as I've said above. I'm not sure what you mean with replacing the connectors and cables in your house, but I just started my cable ISP a few months ago, so all new wires were installed. And the router is newer than the internet service, with all new ethernet wires.
