Hi,

I was wondering what exactly can the OoS being enabled do?

I was really interested in http:// surfing or ftp:// download while p2p appications are running. They really seem to bog down the lan if they are running.

Does this thing only apply to certain ports on the router eg. if 192.168.1.101 is running p2p and 192.168.1.102 is surfing and ftping can one throttle the other? or can it be done by like serivces on one nic or mac? eg can 192.168.1.102 do both p2p and http browsing and actually slow the p2p so browsing is not ridiculas?

Thanks

I'm thinking you meant QoS (Quality of Service). A quick google search of QoS should yield plenty of reading on the subject.

You might also want to read through the manual for your router for a better explanation of how to enable QoS on it...and what it does.

Wow thanks that was helpful and I have read the entire wikipedia article and whatever is on the side when you access the router that gives a brief explanation.

I guess I could always ask linksys for help considering that it is not their firmware in the router. Oh right they may tell me to look the manual too! Oh wait no they won't cause they know:

1. Some people may have bought the router without the manual.

2. They would realize that I said it is not the same firmware and tell me to piss off.

3. They might realize that after all the reading, the person may still be a little confused about the whole thing, and that they may also be asking if it works well or anyones opinion on the subject. Sort of like when I ask about the ddns capabilities of the linksys routers ppl tell me not to invest time in it cause it does not work well or is not worth it.

But I guess I can read my nonexistent manual for firmware it would not cover anyway then I'll smarten up and I'll read all over the Internet for ppls opinions about the QoS of this particular router cause there probably is many out there. While I'm at it I will start a web site that is called computer help, but ask my members to tell ppl to read their manuals and or ask the manufacturer.

thanks

Gee, you read the whole Wikipedia article on QoS and you still can't figure it out.

Maybe if you asked a specific question about QoS after reading that article you'd get some help you lazy clod.

And yes, QoS can slow things down especially on big FTP's and file sharing sights.

From the article: Delay
It might take a long time for a packet to reach its destination, because it gets held up in long queues, or takes a less direct route to avoid congestion. Alternatively, it might follow a fast, direct route. Thus delay is very unpredictable.

Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness
