hi,
i went into my local pc world today and asked the guy if he could give me some advice on setting up a wireless connection with my pc to my laptop which i want to share my cable connection, i asked him what i needed in hardware to get it up and running. this is what he told me ..he said i needed the following...1.linksys broadband router wireless 2.4ghz 54g....2.wireless-g pci adapter to install in my pc(2.4ghz 54mbps and last a wireless usb network adapter to install on my laptop..well i purchased all of thease at a cost of £253 and can i get it to work...noooo can i f****.i think that i was wrongly advised as i think i need a nic i my pc for the router to connect to but the guy told me the wireless pci adapter will do the job..
can anybody give me any pointers on what i need to do to get it working cos i think i need to take the wireless pci adapter back and just get a nic card installed on my pc
many tx for any info..sean

The guy advised you correctly IF you only wanted a wireless solution. If you broadband in coming in and near the pc then a nic card and patch cable to the linksys would have been better [10/100 vs wireless at 11mb].
Question is why isn't it working. Do you get the signal strength on the laptop and the pc? Have you configured the WEP key and the wireless aspect of the linksys? I suspect not.
You have to go into the wireless router and give your wireless network a name. You then have to set the wireless level of encryption [hopefully 128bit] and set the WEP key. Set the wireless router to do dhcp serving.
No go the the configuration of the wireless cards. Set the wireless name and WEP key. Set tcp/ip to dhcp.
That is all there is to it.
Otherwise post back with what isn't working. See if you can ping the gateway. If you had a nic you would want to do a direct connect to the broadband router and see what ip address you get. Then reconnect everything and see if you can ping that address from the wireless station. Make sure you have disabled any firewall software like ZoneAlarm or you will be chasing your tail for days! Once working you can add the correct entries to ZA and you will be up and running.

tx for the quick response ..
yes i have them both connected and the signal strength says its excellent.
does the wireless router have to be connected to a nic card to work or does the network wireless pci card do this for it to connect.
my cable modem connects to my pc via usb connection
so i have disconnected that...should the ethernet cable that came with the router go into the router and into my cable modem?. . (external)...if i disconnect my usb from my cable and use the ethernet cable(modem to router)

continued>>>i get a connected icon flashing but i cant connect to the internet(page not found)..both computers are named the same in the workgroup

Follow the manual instructions on how to setup the wireless connecting I previously described. Same workgroup name is good.
You want to connect the wireless router to the cable modem by the patch cable. Modem to router is correct. All the pc connections are wireless. If you have a nic in the pc connect it with a another patch cable and take the wireless pci card back for a return.
